My initial attraction to photography occurred while traveling in Mexico and Central America during winters of the 1970’s. The visual opportunities were stunning and demanded my attention. The beauty and mystery of the ancient Mayan ruins made a permanent impact. Pyramids and temples shrouded, entangled, lost among serpentine vines and shrubbery of the jungle. These cultural treasures are still being discovered and added to an arcane list of man’s past glories. They became a magnet, drawing me back again and again, further, into a global realm. Each time better prepared technically and aesthetically. I was mesmerized by the architectural and mystical qualities of these magnificent edifices. As the results of my photographic labors yielded greater personal and artistic satisfaction, my visual latitude expanded to additional subjects, styles and techniques. I was hooked. I built a darkroom and taught myself black and white and color printing. Darkroom work gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of the properties of light, and a desire to create and apply it. This natural progression impelled me to buy studio lighting equipment.
I’ve been shooting globally based fine art photography and multi category commercial photography since 1972, totally digital since 2003. Primary catagories of experience commercially are: Portraiture, Fashion, Special Events, Editorial, Corporate, Architecture, Product, Sports, Website.
I consider my art to be conceptual photography. My life is my art, my concept encompasses all my varied travels, experiences, and visual subjects encountered in the last 35 years of image making and travel.
The first photo in all my galleries is a shot of the shadows of the World Trade Center Towers in 1979. Taken from the restaurant on the top floor, Windows on the World, late afternoon sweet light, casting the shadows across the East river as a prescient symbol of what was to come to be.
